Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said the state government is yet to decide on filing an appeal in the Supreme Court against acquittal of Jayalalithaa who is set to stage a comeback as Tamil Nadu chief minister after her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case.
Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India on Friday and will have a tenure of 14 months. The President is pleased to appoint Justice Dattu as the CJI with effect from September 28, 2014, the law ministry announced in New Delhi.
Vijay Mallya-owned Kingfisher Airlines on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court challenging the Karnataka High Court's order directing it to deposit around Rs 185 crore (Rs 1.85 billion) with the Income Tax Department as tax deducted at source (TDS) from its employees' wages.
"The way the hijab imbroglio unfolded gives scope for the argument that some 'unseen hands' are at work to engineer social unrest and disharmony. Much is not necessary to specify," the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said in the order.
